"Saatchi Your Gallery" starts "Show down"
I like this idea, to let users vote for art, the "best" gets a nice win of 1000 pounds, and there is a sort of kick, maybe to follow. But when will the first smart scripts arrive voting automatically ? Some artworks already on the first day of submission refer to the visitor with a "Vote for me!"-tag. Will art with sex-themes and nudes take too much attention and votes in advantage ? It turns out to be a lottery for artists. So lets include bet function too ;)

I think this idea of voting for artworks has maybe a lot of potential. What I don't like, and some questions here:

- the overall bad user interface, you find yourself looking minutes for the most common links

-Is there any master plan against art behind, as it is this what comes to mind when seeing the unclear and bad site structure and the ugly design ?

- the slow page load

- the bad thumbnail and image quality

- Why not a comment function for every image, or at least on every artist-page ?

- I tried the chat 20 times with different artists, it never worked

- Why is there no counter ?

- Why only 8 works for every artist page ?

- Why to start with the submission two weeks before the voting starts ? Why the voting starts not immediately ?

- What sense makes the flash-preview for thumbnail-images ?

- Why is the Gallery-Logo so ugly and so huge, that it takes 4/5 size of my screen ?

I dreamed last night, that I sold a piece on Pulse. It was a photo-poster of a book reading tramp in b/w, what was a print and very popular in the former German Democratic Republic. I remember I just signed and framed that poster and it got sold in minutes for USD 16.000

  Poor rich Artists in Berlin
Christian Saehrendt wrote an very interesting article discussing the living conditions of Berliner Artists in the Swiss Neue Zürcher Zeitung, read the full article here

5000 professional artists are officially registered in Berlin, although the estimates are much higher.

15 percent of artists in Berlin make a living by their art, the others are working in jobs as bar-men, web-designer, teachers.

There are around 55 000 artists (Fine Art) in Germany with an average income of 10 000 Euro per year, beginners around 7500 Euro.

The average artist has 750 Euro income per month, but a share of 15% of the questioned artists have no income at all.

Berlin has around 5000 art students of those about 700 graduates each year.

"Das Ende der Boheme"
paints a mixed picture of Berlins artists hopes and realities. Some few younger artists have success on the booming market, others share a growing number of lucky heirs, but the mayority fights hard for dreams and existence as art-proletarian.

The Sons of the Great Mother Bear
Grown up in former East Berlin under Socialism or Soft Communism or Soft Dictatorship of Erich Honecker and the Genossen, however you want to call it, I had a very happy childhood, good parents, success at school, friends and a children-freedom of little forests, a lake for fishing, bicycling and secret smoking.

I had a huge affection towards North America, the Indians (Native Americans) and the Cowboys, I learned all the maps of Montana and Wyoming, of the Black Hills, of the history of the Pawnees and Crows and Siksikau.

We made our own bows, arrows, knifes, leather leggings, loinclothes, mocassins. I had a very professional book from West-Berlin, how to make it the traditional way. Once I shot an arrow in my brothers leg, and got some problems.

The good guys always wanted to be Tokai-itho or Tashunka-witko or Geronimo, thus the Redmen and never the Cowboys, they were the bad... ;-)

The frames for our dreams were the famous Western movies by the East German DEFA Studios with the actor Gojko Mitic starring in the main role as Osceola, Geronimo and other real historic Native Americans. For some reason these Western movies, made in former Socialist Countries are called at Wikipedia "Osterns" or "Easterns" see the link
The movies had been shot mostly in locations of Romania and Central Asia, particular Uzbekistan.

Gojko Mitic starred in 12 DEFA Western movies, all are great and probably more authentic than most of the related Hollywood productions, from wich our biggest favourite always was The Sons of the Great Mother Bear from 1966

This particular movie is based on the series of books and the screenplay The Sons of the Great Mother Bear by Liselotte Welskopf-Henrich.

My son Hansi is reaching the Indianer-age and I was so happy, when a Georgian friend came up with a DVD with all 12 movies in Russian Language on it. That was a dive back in my childhood, and even today I really really adore these excellent movies.

Read a short English description of the 12 DEFA-Westerns here

If you got interested and want to see it, find the movie The Sons of the Great Mother Bear on DVD or together with 3 other Western movies from DEFA (additional: Apache, Tecumseh, Ulzana) on my Amazon aStore here

  Maka Batiashvili

Maka Batiashvili, originally uploaded by grijsz.

"Art is not only a means of pleasure, but also expression and establishment of freedom, the relation of the internal world to the surrounding environment (…), the conflict of idealism and realism, the relation between the existence and non-existence. The mentality of the artist is always related to the events around him, because these events create the art." Maka Batiashvili

Maka Batiashvili lives and works in Tbilisi, Georgia, where she was born in 1975. After her studies of monumental painting she devoted herself to smaller formats and video works that were shown in diverse exhibitions in Georgia. Her works are journeys into silent strange worlds – thanks to concentrated observations from an unusual perspective, and thanks to their references to Georgian everyday life. Apart from her work as artist Maka Batiashvili is member of the Georgian Artist Group and curates and organises political actions.

Shown painting is an older work from 2000.

Maka has a residency at Blumen-Residency, Leipzig January - April 2007 Her show with recent works will open on February, 8th

I wish Maka lots of cool guests and much success.

George on Paintings and Computer screens
"... I was in the middle of working on a painting which had reached the state of defining itself as a general image but still had a ways to go to completion. I often find this ‘middle stage’ the most difficult part in the process of making a painting, the painting more or less looks all right but I know I have to be willing to push it over the edge, to either resolve it or just create another set of problems. ..." Some very precise conclusions to read on Monday morning with your Coffee and then start in a successful week ... more at FutureModern
